Google Maps API Änderungen / Google Maps API changes

Am 03.05. hat google bekannt gegeben, dass eine Verwendung der im MapSpotter verwendeten google maps API ab dem 11.06.2018 nur noch für Accounts mit verknüpfter Kreditkarte möglich ist. Gleichzeitig wurde

• die Anzahl der maximalen kostenlosen Zugriffe von 25.000/Tag auf 28.000/Monat verringert
• die Preise pro Zugriff um 1400% erhöht

Da die aktuellen Zugriffe auf den XCTrails Mapspotter signifikant über 28.000/Monat liegen, ist ein weiterer kostenloser und uneingeschränkter Betrieb nach dem aktuellen Stand der Dinge ab dem 11.06.2018 nicht mehr möglich.

Google bietet zwar das Setzen von Limits an, mit denen man angeblich verhindern kann, dass Kosten entstehen, verzichtet aber auch dann nicht auf die Erfassung von Kreditkarten-Daten des Seitenbetreibers (!). Ob ich unter diesen Umständen Google Zugriff auf meine Kreditkarte gebe, ist momentan mehr als fragwürdig bis unwahrscheinlich.

Sollte sich Google hier nicht bewegen (in der Vergangenheit wurden solche Ankündigungen auch schon mal revidiert - 2011, 2012), dann wird ab dem 11.06. vermutlich kein Mapspotter Rätsel auf xctrails.org mehr funktionieren.

On May 3, google announced that starting on June 11, using their

• reduce the amount of free calls to their maps service from 25.000/day to 28.000/month
• increase the price per call/load by 1400%

(check out some “feedback” on the net, e.g. on reddit)

Since currently, XCTrails Mapspotter produces significantly more than those 28.000 loads/month, it currently seems impossible to maintain the site without either adding restrictions or producing significant cost.

Google does provide means to set limits, which supposedly prevent generating cost, but even then they will still require credit card data in order to be able to use the “free” service. At this time, I don’t feel inclined to give them access to my credit card under these circumstances.

Should google not revert some of these announcements (as they sometimes did in the past, e.g. 2011 and 2012), then XCTrails Mapspotter will probably stop working on June 11.

The XCTrails map site, geocaching, cross-country-skiing etc. planner will not be affected by this!

Update 7.05.2018:

Dieser Absatz stand in der ersten Veröffentlichung definitiv nicht, und in der “Action required” mail vom 3.5. stand eindeutig “In addition, this change will require you to enable billing and associate it with all of your Google Maps Platform projects.” - interessant, wie sich das “entwickelt”…

-> Das würde zumindest den Weiterbetrieb unter Einschränkungen ermöglichen (mit maximal ~ 900 Aufrufen/Tag).

Update 08.05:

Google hat die Frist bis zur Umstellung bis zum 16.07. verlängert und die Pflicht zur Angabe einer Kreditkarte scheint nun tatsächlich vom Tisch zu sein.

D.h. der Weiterbetrieb mit maximal 900 Zugriffen/Tag scheint gesichert zu sein.

Update: Google has extended the grace period until their changes become active until July 6. Also, the obligation to add a credit card (aka billing account) seems to have been canceled.

That means that we can most likely continue Mapspotter with a limit of 900 calls/page loads per day.
